You’ve got a parcel!

It’s been like a continuous birthday here the last couple of days. Several eBay purchases I had been waiting for for weeks finally arrived (As an aside, why is it that General Motors can build an engine in Virginia and have it at a plant in Ontario in 12 hours, but it takes Canada Customs 3 GoPro Hero Cameraweeks to process a t-shirt?) including the biggie – a GoPro HD camera.
I’ve had my eye on one of these little gems since I first saw them at a show in January, so as soon as I had a bit of what is euphemistically referred to as “disposable income” from the sale of some no-longer-required parts on eBay, the order was placed. Also on eBay, of course.
Today it arrived, along with the mounting gear I had ordered that would allow me to use my RAM mount.  (The GoPro has it’s own rather unique mounting system.)
But as is often the case, the thrill of playing with the new toy will have to wait as I am out of town (no riding involved, but golf and casinos will play a significant role) for the next week or so. I haven’t even left yet and already I can’t wait to get back home to strap it on the bike and go play. It even comes with a helmet mount, so perhaps I’ll grab an old helmet and drive a few back roads and trails for something different,  never-before-seen video footage of the back roads of Lanark Highlands.
A boy and his toys…..

  1. Yup, there's nothing like the excitement of receiving a long-anticipated package. I look forward to your review of the GoPro camera, because I've been thinking about getting one myself.

  2. Dear Canajun:

I refuse to succumb to this video craze. But I do want the latest Garmin GPS for my bike.

  3. Looking forward to your review, since I am also tempted to buy one of those. I agree with Mister R however, and give the latest Garmin higher priority.
Safe riding and cheers from the West coast. SonjaM

  5. Ken, Sonja, Danny - May be a while, but I'll be sure to post when I have something useful to say or videos to share.

Jack - And I refuse to succumb to the GPS phase. I have spent most of my adult life lost, and actually quite enjoy it (sometimes). :)

  6. Canajun:

actually, why don't you take the GoProHD with you out of town. When we had the Winter Olympics here in Vancouver, I used mine on Granville street to capture crowd action. If you go to my Youtube channel you will see my Olympic videos with lots of GoProHD "footage".

I find that it has a great stealth mode, people look at it and think it's a toy so you are able to capture lots of stuff where you wouldn't if it looked like a standard Videocam.

I also used the suction mount upside down on my windshield in the car. I have an upside down GoProHD video also where I flipped it back. By mounting upside down in the car it takes less window space so is not so distracting.

a GPS is invaluable on twisty roads you are not familiar with. When you approaching a curve over a hill the GPS shows which way the road goes. Also if you are riding briskly, you will see the switchbacks come into view on the screen, so reducing radius corners are not a surprise.

  7. Bob - Thought of that, but I didn't get the suction cup mount as I had no plans to use it in the car. But just to carry around isn't a bad idea, so I will take it after all.

  8. have a great vacation! btw, you mentioned suction cups, a word of advice for all; auto thieves look for the suction marks on cars, rentals especially, and these cars are hit/burglarized/stolen frequently. be sure to clean those suction cup marks folks. :)

  9. Ms. M. - Thanks. Great suggestion about the suction cup marks. Never would have thought of it (which is why I'd have made a lousy thief!)

  10. Getting a package is always fun!
I like my GoPRo. Hope you enjoy yours.

  11. Thanks Oz. Still trying to figure out what combination of settings, mounting positions, etc. works best. So far I've discovered that the end of the handlebar on a Harley vibrates WAY too much. :)
