Why am I living where the air hurts my face?

The folks in central and north-eastern North America can, and often do, disagree on a lot of things: religion, politics, guns – it’s a long list. But one thing we can all agree on is this has been the winter from hell, although hell may not be the most appropriate term unless Hell itself has frozen over, which is a distinct possibility this year.

hell

Tomorrow is officially the first day of spring. By now we should be seeing some warm, sunny days and patches of muddy earth emerging from under the blanket of snow. Possibly even the small spikes of a daffodil or two poking up through the still-frozen ground. The maple syrup businesses would be in full swing as we celebrate the coming of spring with a trip to the maple bush, a taste of maple candy, and a gallon (or two) of fresh syrup to take home. The last few maintenance items on the bike will have been done, possibly a pre-season wash if we’ve had a really nice day, our riding gear is all cleaned and ready to go, and we’d be waiting for the last of the ice and snow to clear the roads so we can get that first ride in.

Not this year.

airFour months of unrelenting cold has left us with a couple of feet of snow still on the ground (and more to come tomorrow according to the weather guessers), side roads coated with 6 inches of ice, and a frost so deep it will take until June for the earth to thaw.

I may be planting my tomatoes in July. That is, if I manage to survive the cabin fever until we see a real spring emerge.
I’ve had enough.

Drastic measures may be called for.

I didn't believe you so I went and checked; The weather network and accuweather and guess what ? You're getting a skiff of snow later and more later in the week. All I can say is Wow and it's the first day of Spring tomorrow.

Hang in there . . . can't be long now.

  2. Man I sure hope you don't get more snow.

We've had freak snow storms in April before but they were a fluke and melted right away, nothing piling up that way.

Time to retire somewhere tropical perhaps?

    1. Tempting. I'm kind of partial to St. Maarten, but I expect I'd get tired of the 36 miles of road pretty fast.

  3. I have always said March was nastier than December, because anything happens weather-wise this time of year. It seems that it has been an unrelenting winter for many and I am not sure what I would do with the cabin fever either. Ugh! Come on Spring get your lazy butt out of bed!

    1. True - at least in December you expect the weather to be crappy and you're still not so tired of it. It will come, eventually.

  4. Hmmm, I always thought that March was about the nicest month. The snow still covers all of the junque in everyones yard, no motorhomes, not to many tour busses, no ice fog and generally clear, sunny days (we're already over 12 hours!).

  5. Yup ... spring starts tomorrow and if daffodils can sprout with three foot stems we'll see them soon. Tonight the rain has started with promises to turn to ice or snow tomorrow.

    1. 3-foot stems is about right. If we're lucky this storm will mostly miss us as many have this year. But they've been missing us to the south - your back yard. Sorry 'bout that.

'Spring' in CO is a mish-mash, weather-wise. Warm one day, cold the next. But summer's comin'.

    1. That it is - or so we are told. About 8" of snow fell overnight and more coming, so we'll see.
