Summer getaway

Before heading down to Port Dover for the Friday the 13th celebrations, I spent a little time at a cottage on Doe Lake up the Huntsville area with my brother, fishing and doing some riding.
The fishing wasn’t so great (at least for me), but the riding was excellent.
My favourite road was Highway 518 which is  60 kilometres of twists, turns, hills, and valleys, and seemingly unknown to the rest of the motoring public. I would have thought it would be a sports bike magnet, but we didn’t see one other motorcycle the two times we rode it. All we had to watch out for was moose (didn’t see any, although there were plenty of warning signs) and various roadside attractions that would catch my eye. Here are a couple of my favourites.
Blue tricycle on 518. Just sitting on a rock in front of a home beside the road.
Some very nice rock art. Also on 518.
Tom Thomson bronze sculpture in Huntsville.
Lunch on the patio overlooking the canal in Huntsville.
(It wasn’t just beer… we did have some food as well.)
Taking a break beside one of the many lakes in the area.
It just doesn’t get any better than that!

  2. That's just the BEST - fishing, beautiful location, good food and really nice art.

  3. Mr. M - Look forward to hearing about it. Those kinds of roads are getting harder and harder to find which makes a good one even more noteworthy.

Geoff - Agreed. It was a good trip.

If we had roads like that here it would be a gem, NOT worth sharing with anyone else. We would keep it a secret.

I have spent a few summers in Toronto area many years ago when my parents used to live in Weston, and I still have relatives in London, ON. Too bad I didn't have a bike at my disposal.

  6. bobskoot - I did think about keeping it a secret, but it's too good not to share.

Ken - Thanks. There's some great riding in that area for sure.

  7. Dear Canajun:

I have no idea if you go back to check on prior posts you've done, but I am reading anything I may have missed of yours. I like the shot of the blue bike on the rock, but I was less than enamoured of the artwork on the rock outcropping. This is because I think stuff like this eventually promotes graffiti.

The bikes by the lake wre nice... I keep forgetting you ride a cruiser.

  8. Jack - I think stuff like the ubiquitous "Mary-heart-Paul" stuff does promote graffiti, but this was actually very well done and so I think even the graffiti artists/vandals tend to respect it and leave it alone. Regardless, it was certainly eye-catching.
