The Russians are coming!

No, I’m not referring to the upcoming US midterm elections, although you can be sure they’ll be there bigly, with or without executive support.

I’m referring instead to my simple little blog. Hardly a source of international intrigue and top-secret musings, the Russians nonetheless deem it worth following. In fact, the third highest number of pageviews originate from Russia, right after the US and Canada. Add in Ukraine and they combine to exceed the number of Canadian views.

Pageviews

So, Vladimir, care to explain?

  1. Yeah, I get that too, lot's of hits some days from Russia or another former Soviet bloc country. I've read that its some kind of hacking where they're trying to get into someone's account to steal identity or whatever it is they're trying to do. All those hits maybe from the same source. It's not your Russian fan club, that's for sure.

  2. I've noticed similar stats on my blog and agree with BJ that it's not your Russian fan club...

    1. I used to run a Wordpress server on our cable modem connection and there were thousands of entries per day in the log from Russian and Chinese IP addresses. Mostly Wordpress attacks. I gave up on Wordpress and just moved my blog to Blogger at that point.

  3. Hmmmmm.... that's really interesting David! Guess you've been identified as a key influencer :-) . Out of curiosity, I've just had a look at mine from the start of 2018. UK tops the list with Australia and the US close behind. They're followed by NZ a wee way back then Canada and France a long way back. I do get the odd Russia one but you can count them on the fingers of one hand. Nice not to be noticed!

    1. Most of the Russia and China entries weren't in the last year. I haven't dug into it much but if I look at just the last year, there were only a handful. But if you show total since the blog has been up, then Russia and China dominate.

    2. Richard, I did have a burst of Russian ones last year but they only occurred over the space of two days according to Google Analytics.

  4. Hmmm, I haven't checked my stats in a while, Russia for some reason is no. 4 on my list after the US, Canada and Germany. And I don't even speak the language. I wonder what they might get out of it.

    1. Well I finally checked my stats and for all time, U.S. is 1. Russia is 2, and Ukraine is 3. Not sure why, unless they're trying to get my grandma's plum dumpling receipe! Canada is 9, I guess the frost backs just don't know a good blog when they see it!

  5. I have a particularly British blog. Very mundane but the damned yankees and russkies are my biggest audience...

    1. Let's see. The Russians follow you, so the Americans want to know what they know, so they start following you. Then the Russians want to know why the Americans are there. It soon spirals out of control and before long you're the subject of a mention on Fox News followed by an early morning tweet from the White House. All very predictable really.
